A rainy day, makes for a soggy painting, but it had some merit, so here it is:

Watercolors starting over

Everytime I switch from Oils back to Watercolors, I have some trouble.
Evidence  shows that I tend to cover all the paper with paint at first, as if painting with oils, then later I figure it out. Finally, I start to remember to leave some of the white of the paper.

I am going to post several watercolors that I have completed lately, and I will post chronologically, so you can see how I attempt to progress out of my over-use of paint.

These are the first:

Watercolors

A study of Shadow.

...Could also be called a study in shadows. What a great challenge to paint something mostly black and still make it look 3-D.
My friend Noel has this wonderful old dog, and has asked if I could paint a portrait of Shadow.
This is just a preliminary study that I painted in watercolor to see what problems I will have to solve when I begin painting the final version in oils.

Do you remember winter?

I know, this year we haven't had much snow.
Although where I live -there is actually snow on the ground!
I have been trying to decide if it is worth it to try to carve anything out of my snowpile.
It's not very big and the temperature seems too cold to sculpt when I have the time.

I started thinking...

 I was remembering previous snowy years.






Sometimes we have been known to get this much snow:

I remember John and I, building a snowsculpture, in the style of Calvin and Hobbes...

 I am not complaining. The drive to work has been safer than ever.
I just thought I'd  take a look back as I load these photos into the snowscultpting page. I do hope you are all having a safe and wonderful winter.
I have finished 3 watercolors lately, but left them at work, so I will photo those and load them onto the computer next weekend or sooner...

Retail Holiday sales, and inventory

Just in case anyone was wondering why I seemed to have fallen off the edge of the map.
I work Retail, at a fabulous store called Artists Mediums Inc. (http://www.artistsmediums.com/)

This means I have been putting in a lot of hours...
and inventory takes even more of my time...

The staff helps me by helping to count everything in the store, but I spend an awful lot of hours doing the data entry for inventory....so hopefully after I finish up inventory, and we plan out some of the coming year for the store, I may just get back into the artwork.

My oil paints are dry.
I am trying to decide.
I would like to try some more watercolors...
or I could mix another batch of oil,
since I have a friend who has commissioned me to paint a portrait of his dog...

I keep wondering if I should paint this one large area (poorly framed in) behind my woodstove before the Open studio tour. It used to be an old bulliten board I think only it's been painted white.

I'll have to take a photo of the wall so you can see what I mean.

I figured the best thing I could really do it try to make it look like a window... so

I took this photo Monday, from the kitchen.

Right now the trees are so full you can't really see much of anything...

just a blur of green and a glimpse of the river.

No, I am not getting completely distracted from the upcoming Plein air festival...

Obviously I didn't get around to painting it, there was so much else to do!

Now: 11-20-11

I am finally showing you the photos of the space that I am considering painting.

I've actually spent some time smmothing out the surface a bit.

(I think it used to be a bulletin board.)

I definately want to make a long panoramic landscape on this surface.

To this end I have been practicing my panoramic photography. 

 I don't claim to really be good at it...all I need is an image worth painting.

Or maybe perfectly at peak...where I live.
Someone at my work didn't believe me since everything in town is all green..

but there's the proof! The color up in my neck of the woods is Phenominal!!!
Just in time for Open Studio!
(I've been sick for several days..but I am much better now, and ready for a bout of ART!)

There are over 50 oils, several Watercolors (they are mostly, but not all landscapes)
I only said prints, even though I do Blockprints and Monoprints...

Well, I know I haven't written for a bit, but I have done some art since the Plein air Fest...

mostly monoprints. Here's a sneak peek at one of them...

I have several more to do tonight.
It looks easy, but for every 12-20 I print, there are only (usually) about 2 or 3 worth framing...
(That uses a lot of really nice paper, and so my note paper pile is looking really cool!)

One from my last session was really nice, and I have already framed it.
The catalog of art is coming along as well... up to 50 peices of art so far for the Open Studio show.

We pick up the maps for Open Studio Thurs Aug 18th, so I should be able to provide a link to the maps soon.

I Am Posting these Photos again, because now I have the correct spelling of the names of the fabulous organizers who made this whole event possible.

The Plein air Festival was wonderful!                                          

 I had a GREAT time and was impressed by the magnificent work done by all the organizers, and volunteers!

 

 Gorgeous weather, friendly people...

I was also quite humbled by the talented people, that I was blessed to spend the day with!

 

I think many one of us would gladly do it again.
Thank you to The Organizers: Barbara Greene, Emilie G Alexander, and Jane Morgan, everyone who participated, everyone who came to view the art, and of course The Emille Gruppe Gallery, The Barber Farm, well as all the volunteers & sponsors!
